Staying well is paramount if you want to enjoy life to the fullest. We believe you can maintain wellness following our ReVamp Wellness Mantra so that you will have energy to continue your physical hobbies or be active with your children/grandchildren for years to come. Who doesn't want to still have a spring in their step at retirement age?

In a way, how you look on the outside is a reflection of the state of your internal cells, which is why we have discussed revamping your skin first, but we are just as interested in your overall vitality.

We all know the usual wellness mantra:

  • eat well
  • hydrate
  • exercise regularly
  • get lots of sleep
  • things in moderation not to excess

and we're not going to argue with that., but we want to bring to your attention 2 more important factors in our ReVamp Wellness Mantra - stress management and gene expression

ReVamp Wellness Mantra

  • eat well - have a colourful plate
  • hydrate - drink plenty of water
  • exercise regularly - short and often is better than no exercise
  • get lots of sleep
  • things in moderation not to excess
  • choose to be happy. Laugh more. Stay present. Meditate. Kick stress to the curb
  • take a supplement to optimise your anti-oxidant levels
  • keep the expression of your genes in balance - for example with a healthy lifestyle and supplements, but also by being careful with your self-talk and your underlying beliefs about your health

STRESS MANAGEMENT AND GENE EXPRESSION

Inflammation

Did you know that STRESS is a major risk factor for most modern day illnesses like cancer, diabetes, arthritis and heart disease.

Chronic stress is associated with the body losing its ability to regulate the inflammatory response. And it is this 'out of control' INFLAMMATION that causes many diseases.

A major mechanism for inflammation-related damage is oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Antioxidants in the body 'mop up' these free radicals and so neutralise this oxidative stress and are important in reducing disease. I'm sure you've heard of anti-oxidants and how you can boost your levels with certain foods and supplements.

Genetic Factors

You may have heard of EPIGENETICS. This is the science, strongly influenced by studies on twins, that has shown that the way genes express is influenced by the environment.

So even if you have the genetic disposition for cancer, that does not necessarily mean you will get cancer. It depends on whether the gene is 'expressed' and the EXPRESSION of genes is influenced by signals they receive from the environment.

It's as if a gene can be 'turned on' and 'turned off' although in reality it's more about the genes being balanced than turned on or off.  Clearly, having your genes balanced for health and vitality is the ideal situation.

Putting this into Practice

So to remain really well we need to address the following:

  • reduce stress
  • reduce inflammation
  • avoid having genes that are 'out of balance'

The above lists looks a bit daunting in that form, so let's make it a bit more positive:

  • enjoy life. Take the time to smell the roses and actively undertake stress-busting activities
  • optimise your anti-oxidant levels by choosing a healthy diet and effective supplements
  • keep the expression of your genes in balance as much as you can

I know it seems like it's a case of 'easier said than done' because it can be confusing navigating the literature around these topics, but we are planning on sharing our approach and how we have chosen to maintain our wellness.

Supplements

For example, you are probably aware of claims that different antioxidants and food additives are good for reducing inflammation-related aging effects. Diets of people around the world all have their own 'magic' ingredient. There are so many claims about being on this supplement or that supplement, it can be confusing and quite frankly until recently I had given up on supplements - one minute something's in and the next minute it's out (to paraphrase Heidi) and it just seemed easier to ignore it all.

However, I am now back on a supplement. I found a nutritional supplement based on the 'magic' ingredients you would get from a Peruvian diet, a Japanese diet, the best of the Mediterranean diet etc. that would be impossible to get from my normal diet. And the best thing, there is compelling research about how it works at the cellular level to reset gene expression to return the body to it's youthful state of health and vitality. That was the clincher for me because it deals with how I reduce inflammation and it resets the balance in my youth gene expression in one go. And I have stress-busting covered - I'll share more in the blogs.
