"How to take action even if procrastination is keeping you out of commission"

"How to take action even if procrastination is keeping you out of commission"

Kids sorted. Lunches made, uniforms on, hair tied, teeth brushed and dropped off at school. House tidied, washing on the line.

Ah – That sweet moment when there are no JOBS to do. FREEDOM.

Oh what to do with my time today.

Mmmmm – I could actually exercise?! Maybe hit the treadmill, or go for a walk in the park.

Actually – Why not ring some friends and see who's free for a coffee. Or maybe I could do ANYTHING that’s on the overdue list.

Ever felt like that? You know something would be good for you, or there's something you really NEED to do - BUT NOOOOOO!!! RESISTANCE kicks in

Foods to Keep you Young

Foods to Keep you Young

Do you think that you can affect how you age or do you think that it is predetermined? Do you think that it depends on your genes?

Well, as I spoke about in the article about telomeres, you'll know that we can influence how we age . One way is by increasing the lifespan of our cells by increasing the length of the telomeres (the ends of our DNA that sort of resemble the plastic ends of shoelaces that stop them unravelling).

But more importantly than just increasing cell lifepsan, it's about staying healthier for the time that we are alive.

So, today I want to introduce you to foods that keep you young.

What have Boot Laces got to do with Staying Young?

What have Boot Laces got to do with Staying Young?

I have a pair of boots that I can best describe as 'KILLA' - they are red patent leather, Natasha Marro ankle boots with a black tongue, stiletto heels, cloven hoof toe..... I absolutely love them and always feel a million dollars when I wear them and I definitely feel youthful.

The plastic ends of the laces have come off, though, so it's always a bit of a mission to lace them up as the ends of the laces are frayed. Yes, I could invest in some new laces but I manage with the original.

So, here's the thing. Our chromosomes have ends on them as well to stop them fraying - the end bits are called TELOMERES. Don't worry, I'm not going to get all sciency on you but if you are interested in preserving your vitality and youthfulness, you'll want to read this.

Who said Peter Pan was fiction?

Who said Peter Pan was fiction?

Ok, Peter Pan is a piece of fiction. It holds a place close to my heart, mainly because it was written by JM Barrie and he bequeathed (great word) the proceeds to The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond St, London where I spent time working during my paediatric training.

But back to the point of this post, Peter Pan was forever youthful. I don't suppose anyone wants to stay a child but maintaining your youthful looks is something that is aspired to by so many and you don't have to resort to surgery or invasive procedures like Botox and fillers to achieve it.

Can you really turn back time with your skincare and/or health supplements. It seems a tall order, but actually you can.

You don't need eyes to see, you need VISION

You don't need eyes to see, you need VISION

remember the day clearly. I was picking my mother up from her eye appointment. She had developed macular degeneration a few years before and this was a routine eye check. She got in the car and I could see that she was upset - she told me that they (the ophthalmologist) had taken her drivers licence off her.

We sat there for a moment - if you know my mother you know that she wouldn’t dwell and be quickly saying ‘but there are people much worse off than me’. But there was a moment when I felt the grief - not just of losing the right to drive, but of losing her independence. There were no words that could make it better.

Macular degeneration had sort of ‘jack-in-the-box’ sprung into our lives.

How do you measure preventative care?

How do you measure preventative care?

You’ve heard the phrase ‘Prevention is better than Cure’ hundreds of times. You’re probably even undertaking preventative care right now. If you’re eating a healthy diet or exercising frequently, this is preventative care - these are activities to keep you healthy, to prevent disease.

The question is how do you know that what you are doing is actually having any effect.

I have a friend who was undergoing treatment for cancer and she said she didn’t know what she could change when the chemotherapy was over as she was already eating a healthy diet and exercising before the diagnosis. You probably know people who have similar stories.

Do you insist on natural products?

Do you insist on natural products?

There's a bit of a trend at the moment - insisting on 'natural', or 'organic', but is that what you should be insisting on or is 'non-toxic' a better choice.

So, here's the thing - if natural just means to you that a product comes from nature - so from a plant, for example - you may begetting more than you bargained for.

Plants live in soil and however careful the plants are tended to and harvested, the soil is affected by weather, by rainfall, by what is draining into the soil. etc So there may be heavy metals or other contaminants in the soil and they will affect the plant but it may not be obvious to the naked eye and you probably won't know if contaminants have affected your products.

Nature is not all good

Natural Disasters! Can be a nightmare

Natural Disasters! Can be a nightmare

Life throws us curve balls…… often.

But sometimes they are way more curvy and harder to handle than others.

When things like Natural disasters (or other major stress inducing events) hit, we are prone to respond in a myriad of ways.

Some people get emotional, some freeze and can’t do anything, or can’t make decisions, and some people kinda cruise through – cool as a cucumber.

Finally a lash solution I'm happy to try

Finally a lash solution I'm happy to try

Long Strong Eyelashes - who doesn't want them? But what are you prepared to do to get them?

Eye Lash Extensions - tried them but they're not for me

I'm putting my hands up - I did try eyelash extensions for a while. I loved the long eyelash look and they looked great immediately afterwards, but....... Yes, there is a but. Sometimes the glue on a particular lash would lose it's effectiveness well before the 'reapply date' and then the extension would sort of hang from my lash and be extremely annoying.

An annoying lash extension would mean I would try and extricate it from my lash. I'm not sure if the glue weakened my lashes over time but what happened was that my actual lashes would break. And break quite easily.

So, after a few months of eyelash extensions I gave up on them and crossed my fingers

How to get more Energy using Ground-breaking Research

How to get more Energy using Ground-breaking Research

Are you suffering from fatigue, mental fogginess, low libido - if you said yes to any of these, then I have a solution for you and it's based on research that has been lauded as ground-breaking.

How ground-breaking you ask? Well, good enough to get a Nobel Prize.

Yes, the 2016 Nobel prize winners are out - did you see that the Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Yoshinori Ohsumi? The reason he got it is for his research in autophagy which started in the 1990’s.

Yes, autophagy is a big word but basically Dr Ohsumi identified that our cells have recycling mechanisms to keep them functioning. And if the recycling plant doesn’t work, toxins build up and can lead to diseases and disease processes.

So, you may be wondering what this means for you or what it will mean for future developments.

Well I have great news. This science is already being used in products that help people.

Sea Kelp - the Low Down

Sea Kelp - the Low Down

Sea kelp has been used for thousands of years for its health benefits, especially in Asia and, in particular, Japan.  The wrapping of sushi is actually sea kelp. What else do you know about sea kelp? Well here is our low down.

Where does it come from?

Sea kelp comes from the sea - yes it's seaweed. It is an edible seaweed that is rich in minerals and vitamins, especially iodine. Kelp can be eaten raw which is a bit of an acquired taste or taken in supplements - I bought the powder once but to be honest, the smell was so strong, I wished I had bought the supplements.

Kelp can also be applied topically in skin and hair care products.

Kelp is part of the everyday diet in many cultures, particularly Japan. It is used in soups, in salads, as a garnish, in sauces and in cakes.

What is it?

Soooo Embarrassing!!

Soooo Embarrassing!!

My daughter is a bit of a free spirit.

Full of fun and laughter.

She is quite a bubbly and cheerful little angel who helps to light up our family.

Recently she was busy dancing around her room. Just doing her own thing.

Unfortunately for her, some men were working out in the street and they were all laughing as they saw her randomly dancing around her room.

When she noticed that they were laughing, she dropped to the floor, crawled out of her room and came to see me – MORTIFIED.

Poor little darling.

T-Tapp - the Low Down

T-Tapp - the Low Down

What is T-Tapp?

It is an home exercise programme designed by Teresa Tapp, hence the name. It has been described as the 'ideal anti-aging' workout by Nicholas Perricone, MD, author of 'The Perricone Weight Loss Diet'

What's different about T-Tapp as an exercise?

What makes T-Tapp such a great exercise regime is that:

  • it involves whole muscle activation so is very efficient
  • it can be as little as 15 mins per day twice a week once you are in the maintenance phase - after a 4 day, 7 day or 14 day bootcamp (which is daily workout of either the full workout or the 15 min Basic Workout Plus)
  • as you get better you don’t need to increase reps or weights, you just need to improve your technique

Turmeric has been used for centuries, particularly in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is well known as a spice but knowledge of its beneficial qualities is becoming increasingly widespread.

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

Tumeric comes from the turmeric plant which is a relative of the ginger family. Turmeric grows in the tropical regions of. Southern Asia, particularly India. It has yellow flowers. The roots and bulbs of turmeric are used in medicine and food and when boiled and dried they are a yellow colour. It is turmeric that gives the yellow colour to curries, and it has also been used to colour mustard and butter.
